It was an Espen Knutsen slap shot that was deflected. Her name was Brittanie Cecil. She was attending the game on her 13th birthday. For the rest of the year the Blue Jackets wore on their helmets a heart shaped decal with her initials.

Yes, that was a very sad situation. Knutsen took a slap shot and it deflected off a Flames defenseman. The Blue Jackets give away 6 $1000 scholarships in her honor every year. Very shortly after she passed away, the safety nets came into effect. They are a great idea, but it's so sad that Britany was the cause of that safety rule.

knutsen. shot deflected and hit the girl in the face. she claimed at the game she was fine so she didn't go to the hospital and she died from internal bleeding.
