ok i heard it a million time. "Its only red if it gets oxygen". How in the world are you able to see blood without exposing it to oxygen?

your blood is red when it is carrying oxygen (When in your arteries/exposed to air) and is blue whenm devoid of oxygen (in your veins, which are transparent and the blue blood shows through)

This is a technical question calling for a technical answer.
The 'red corpuscles' floating in the bloodstream are red only when they have been oxygenated by the oxygen in the lungs. When they give up the oxygen to cells in the rest of the body they lose the redness and seem blue. That's why your veins look blue through your partly translucent skin.
The rest of the blood, the fluid which carries corpuscles, is basically colorless.

Man I'm dying reading some of these answers- let's put the myth to rest right here and right now- BLOOD IS NEVER BLUE- IF YOU HAVE BLUE BLOOD, YOU ARE NOT HUMAN. Blood is red, red, red, inside and out. It is a different shade of red depending on whether it is oxygenated or not. Oxygenated blood has a brighter red shade, while deoxygenated blood is a darker shade. BLOOD IS NEVER BLUE. Blue color of veins comes from the fact that the fat under your skin absorbs lower frequencies of light, while the high wavelength blue light can penetrate the fat and reflect off the vein, making it appear blue. Trust me, if you ever opened up a human being you would see that the arteries and veins are both red...they're not REALLY blue. Diagrams often color them differently to differentiate between the two. Some laboratory dissection animals have certain dyes injected into them for academic purposes to make it easy to distinguish veins from arteries.

Those who say blood is always red are correct.

Think about it--when you get your blood drawn at the doctor, it goes directly from your vein into a needle. It is never exposed to air. Does it look blue? No, of course not.

The only animal that has blue blood is the horseshoe crab.

Blood with enough oxygen is bright red in and outside the body. Yes, it looks blue through the skin in the veins, but it is red. If it isn't getting enough oxygen, the color will be a darker red.
I hope this helps.

Any time blood has oxygen in it it turns red, but when there is no oxygen present it is blue. That is why it is blue in your veins then red when it mixes with air.

Depends on the blood. De-oxygenated blood is a dark purple/blueish. Oxygenated blood is bright red.

well, blood gets its red colour from the red blood cells. these red blood cells contain haemoglobin, which combines with oxygen. when there is a low level of oxygen in the blood, its colour becomes somewhat duller. when it is rich in oxygen, it becomes a bright red.

however, take the red blood cells out of blood, and you get an entirely different colour altogether. plasma, which is 90% of your blood, is actually yellowish-orangey in colour. white blood cells are pale yellow.

There is no such thing as a stupid question. When exposed to oxygen whatever blood is turns red. Before that it is blue. Immunology was a truly enlightening class for me. Never be ashamed to ask about blood. I implore you.
