A male betta is usually ready to mate when he blows a bubble nest. Bettas will mate year round if everything else is correct for them.
PLEASE read up carefully and prepare really well before you try to mate them or you will most likely fail. It's not all that hard, but a bit tricky and if you don't know the details you can't pull it off.

Breeding bettas is not something to take lightly. Its often a difficult process. A male betta looking for a lady will blow a bubble nest, patrol his tank and act very agressive when anything gets near his nest, even you.
You will need to place your male in a 10g tank with very light filtration and no substrate at all. Some plants and hiding places are good. let your male stay there for a few weeks or until he blows a nest, then place a female in a tank where the male can see her. He will get used to her and this reduces the chance the male will attack with the purpose of driving her off when she is introduced.
Let the female and male get to know each other for a week or 2, then if the male has a nest introduce her. Remove if the male is violent and nasty, or after she lays eggs and the males moves them to the nest.
Then watch your male guard his eggs and then the young fry
Perpare space for a great many betta fry.

It is a lot of work to mate and breed betas without the female and the fry dying. But you should never mate your male until he has a large bubble nest for the fry. Try to do some research on it before you attempt to breed them.

You need to have more than one female in that tank. Male bettas are known for loving a female to death (literally). If you really want to "get it some," try putting five or six females in the tank with him. Male Bettas are generally not going to be very happy with others invading his space, though.

You should really make some research before you mate your betta, it's not a pretty thing to watch and they can kill each other if something goes wrong.
