PHILIP isn't Greek!!!! He is Danish-German-English-Russian.His Royal House Name is Schlessweig-Holstein- Sonderburg-Glucksburg. He adopted the English name of his relatives, the Mountbattens, when he became a naturalised British citizen. They originally were Battenbergs. The family was asked to take on the Greek throne in a most unusual fashion.Queen Alexandra, then Princess of Wales had a brother named Willi. He was approached by Lords Palmerston and Russell;they asked the 18 year oled WIlliam if he'd like to be King of Greece. He thought they were joking and said he'd like nothing better. The next day it was announced that he had agreed to become King!No other royal family in Europe wanted the job,so everyone said that William could have the throne.

In Crete, the surnames end at -akis:
Papadakis, Apostolakis, Giannakakis, etc.
In the Peloponnese, they end in -opoulos:
Papadopoulos, Apostolopoulos, Giannakopoulos, etc.
In Lakonia, southern Peloponnese, they end in -akos:
Andreakos, Apostolakos, Kilakos
In Kefalonia, they end in -atos:
Andreatos, Anastasatos, Stamatelatos, etc.
MAny Greeks from Pontos (Asia Minor) have names ending in -idis:
Christidis, Seitaridis, Pezirkianidis, etc.
There are many more surnames without characteristic endings, of course, like Oikonomou, Arvanitis, Manoliadis, Stergiou, etc.
Also, there are names coming from different cultures or languages integrated in Greece in very old times, during the Byzantium era or the ottoman occupation, like Capellas, Bithas, Aslanoglou, Roussos, Koutsis, Biris, etc.
If you want many more surnames, go to www.whitepages.gr (the greek phone directory).

The names that end with -opoulos come from Peloponissos (south greece).
with-akis come from Crete.
with-akos or with-eos come from Sparta, or Mani in general (area in Peloponissos).
with-atos come from Ionian islands.
with-adis or with -idis or with-oglou come from northern greece (Salonica etc).
You can put almost anything in front of the word and you have the name you need.
For example, Mari-atos, from Ionian islands
Mari-opoulos from Peloponissos,
Mari-akis, from Crete etc.
