The story was about a little boy who is visited by monsters at bedtime. He goes with them to the dark side of a planet. I remember one of the monsters was bird-like and in one illustration the eyes are drawn really big with the blood vessels showing. The illustrations were vivid color. One important thing I remember about the book is that the boy referred to his Mom as Mum throughout the book so it had to have been a foreign author. I had the book back in the mid 80s. Does ANYONE know which one I'm talking about? It's NOT a Maurice Sendak book.
