I agree, actor is the correct, and preferred term, for Male and Female performers.

The word "actor" is for both male and female performers. Not sure what you mean by different kinds unless you're referring to theatrical genres like comedy, tragedy, musical theatre, etc. Either way.. actresses is the incorrect term for female theatrical performers.

You might be referring to such things as "ingenues" who are the young leading ladies and "character women" who play the more interesting roles.
