The wheel keeps them entertained and busy. If they don't have one, they will often try much harder to escape, climb all over the cage, etc. Running helps a rodent calm down; in nature, anxiety provokes running, they run around looking for food, gathering nest material, etc. They just feel happier and calmer when they have a wheel.

They say if you have a wheel in the cage with them and then take it out later that they could become depressed (as they enjoy the exercise) and could go off an die, however if they have never had one in with them they that wouldn't happen. The purpose of having a wheel in the cage with them is to provide them some exercise and entertainment.

My suggestion would be if you don't have a wheel in the cage with your animal(s), to make sure they have some form of exercise (such as a free roaming ball) as well as other things to do in the cage.

Hamsters need a wheel. They will run on the wheel several hours every night.

Some gerbils like wheels, too. Others are not very interested in wheels. Gerbils like to tunnel, gnaw, play with and groom their cage mate, climb, gnaw, run, and gnaw. If they have plenty of cardboard and other things to do they may not need a wheel and if they have a wheel it will be just one of their many activities.

They should have one. Keep in mind that hamsters are nocturnal, and while you're sleeping, your hamster is awake...doing hamster things. Hamster things usually consist of running on its wheel, eating, making its bed more "comfy" etc. If it's got no wheel, it got really nothing to exercise on, and will become extremely bored. Imagine being in a big room with nothing but food and water, and a bed. No entertainment, nothing to do. You'd go nuts. A hamster wheel provides your hamster with exercise, and entertainment.

Nothing really "happens" but not having a wheel doesn't provide much exercise for your animal. It may become mean and resort to biting and or scratching.

They will start to gain weight and get mischievous. They will gain bad habits out of boredom such as bar chewing, or throwing bedding out of there cage.
