Sometimes I get really sad at the way the World is...people dying in Iraq and Afghanistan everyday, child molestors kidnapping children and people committing awful crimes to others, starving children in Africa, hundreds of thousands forced from their homes in Sudan....it may sound silly, but all these things really make me sad, and sometimes I feel like my job (an attorney) is so trivial and unimportant in the big scheme of things. I also feel like people are just too materialistic these days (money, fast cars, nice clothes, etc). Sometimes these feelings interfere with my own life by making me feel depressed and helpless. I try to do what I can for charity and stuff...but it just doesn't feel like enough. What can I do???

I guess I just want to know if there are others who feel the same way....sometimes I wish I was like my friends....ignorance is truly bliss.

I feel ya. I dont do too much for charity because sometimes, I feel like charity!!! Maybe you can look for new work in a field that is more helpful, but still using your talents as an attorney. I dont know, maybe work for a non-profit organazition or something.

My solution, I watch a lot of comedy; I love lucy, seinfeld, silly shows that make me laugh...its all you can do sometimes.

I get the same way sometimes because there is just so much nastiness and negativity in the world. The fact that you think about these people and their plights is a wonderful start, as is giving to charity. You are doing your part to make the changes you want to see in the world by doing what you do. It's a lot more than some people do, so remind yourself of that. You care deeply, and that is what matters the most.

Though its true one person can change the world, you really cant do more than you are, unless you want to quit your job and join the peace core or something like that. It not you who need to do more there need to be more people in the world who care, like you do. Then the world will start to get better. You shouldn't feel helpless you cant change those things you see on tv, you can only help change the things around you. Its sounds like your doing pretty good. Dont feel so bad.

Life is too short to be sad! You are trying the best you can and you have good intentions. Human beings have the natural instinct for empathy, so don't give up hope! There is much hate and hardship in the world, but only because we are misguided and need to find a place in the world to belong and feel safe. When you smile, the world smiles back at you! Happiness is contagious!

if you only pay attention to the bad things then yes the world is pretty depressing. Go looking for the good things. I look in the news, and I ignore the bad stuff and look for something good. Believe it or not something good happens everyday. Why don't you find different ways to do charity, maybe your way isn't full filling you. Try doing something hands on. Keep you chin up, the world really isn't that bad

Yes. Each of us are different. Our parents raised us in certain ways and we all have free will. Men see actions and deeds but who sees the heart? That which rest truly deep in is who we really are.

The bad and good perish, everyone does but death is not the end. Beyond human suffering there is salvation. If we look within and clearly, we will find that the truth had always been there ... ... we can look good in front of men, but in quiet times, we live with what we have done in our lives.

Hidden tales and malice does not escape a shallow covering, and true deeds are done without the world watching. Pride the mother of all sins, how the bright morning star fell!

Look to the narrow path, and you will find all your answers

I cannot believe that you, being an attorney have sad feelings!

Just kidding. I feel sad about that stuff all of the time. I see it way too much.

My husband left me awhile ago. I am trying to make ends meet for myself, and I still feel bad that I cannot give to other people. I never made any huge contributions, but I always gave to fundraisers, and things like breast cancer awareness, and things like that.

I also see other single mothers that have it much worse than I do, and it is sad. The world needs to straighten up.

The World, in its current state, really sucks. I know how you feel because I feel the same way...its almost like you found your way out of the Matrix (if you've seen that movie). To me, the worst is people's attitudes of ambivalence towards the suffering of others.

Most people just go on living in their little bubbles and go about their daily lives without a clue about the "big picture". Then again, maybe ignorance really is bliss...can someone please plug us back in???

The world is tragically sad. But instead of dwelling on it, it would be in one's best interest to try and change one's perspective. There was symbolic dialogue in "The Matrix:"

"Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth: there is no spoon. Then you will see that it is not the spoon you must bend, but only yourself."

This means that if we change our perspectives, the world can become much more livable to us.

In existance, as a planet, as a species,as life, we have come a long way. Don't forget that.

No. Look, if you watch the news and read the papers your going to get depressed, because thats there job to sell papers and normal stuuf does not sell, the screwed up stuff sells. The world is messed up for sure, but mostly good still I think. You have to be able to seperate the good and bad, the nice and mean, and just keep rolling.
