I am trying to hookup my roommates computer to my router so he can use the internet but it is saying on his pc that there is limited or no connectivity because the network did not assign a network address to this computer. When I go home I don't have a problem when I hook my computer up to my moms router. What should I do??

As far as I understand there is one router and two computers correct? If your friends computer wont connect due to the network not assigning him an IP number then DHCP must have been turned off on the router...

In order for your computer be on the network, it needs an IP number.... And when DHCP is turned on, on the router, the router assigns this IP number automatically. If its turned off then you will manually need to assign an IP number to your computer...

Check your computer thats on the network for IP settings and use that IP range on your friends computer....

I hope both your's and your-friends computers are in one home.... LOL....

Personally - when I have a problem (if you think everything is set right) - just have the router re-set itself by pulling the plug and then plugging it back in.

This happens around here with 4 computers online. I will try to connect sometimes and I will get the same message - sometimes pulling up the internet connection on the computer and clicking Repair will work - but most times I just yell down..............Reset the Router Please.........and then I will get a great connection.

OK - Well the workgroup name for sure has nothing to do with it.

What IP address is he getting - Click Start RUN type in CMD click OK - Then type in ipconfig hit enter. If hes getting a 169.x.x.x - Then your DHCP is having issues on the router. If hes getting a 172.x.x.x or a 192.x.x.x then something may be set wrong on the router.

Check to make sure he doesnt have an IP type in on his TCP IP settings. Right click on the My Network Places icon and choose properties - Right Click on the Local Area Connection and choose properties. Double Click on TCP/IP in the list - Verifiy both are set to obtain Auto.

If its the router - Follow the instructions on resetting it to defaults - Unless you feel comfortable in looking into the configurations.

Except on the last part choose "Just finish the wizard...."

That will solve it.
