Well, WW1 greatly changed our perceptions of what life is about. It had a major impact on art and poetry. For example, it created a world in which W. B. Yeats would write:

and

Are full of passionate intensity.
Adolf Hitler was on the rise as he wrote that poem.

--> Austria-Hungary and Germany lose power
--> African-Americans and women gained factory jobs in the U.S. only to lose them when the soldiers came back
