Wilson believed in missionary diplomacy. He wanted peace for all nations and his idea of that was for all nations to get equal treatment. It meant to treat Germany fairly. However, that did not happen, and thus led the way for Hitler to come into power.

The purpose of the U.S. entering WWI (when Wilson was president) was to "make the world safe for democracy".

Our purpose wasn't to earn land or show our power - it was to help the world be a better place.

He wanted the U.S. to enter the war to create peace. After a war there usually is a taking of land and $$ to the winning side...he didn't want any of that. He wanted the war to end without any repercussions.

He may be referring to peace through a coalition, where a group of maybe four agree to peace. There is no one in the group claiming victory, as in "wins something and from where", and the group reaches their goal of peace, which in itself is their victory. The group would have to serve as equals to establish this peace. Thank you.

When you win a war and claim victory you perpetuate the anger and resentment, and create an ongoing enemy. By being benevolent as the winner, you keep war from happening again (ie., Germany).
