Eratosthenes used trigonometry to calculate the circumference of the earth around 240 b.c. Prior to that, many Greeks theorized that the earth was a sphere, but I think it was Aristotle who came up with the first proof of that: he noted that there were stars visible in Egypt that were not visible in the north, and the only explanation for that would be a spherical earth.

The fact that the earth is a sphere was probably "discovered" and lost many times in the ancient world. A spherical earth is described in Vedic Sanskrit texts written in ancient India in the 9th–8th century BCE. It is not clear whether the Greeks rediscovered it or got it from India. Ferdinand Magellan's Voyage around the world, 1519-1522 CE proved it, even to people who didn't understand geometric arguments.
Watching ships come into view over the horizon provides a clue and shows the earth is not flat to anyone who thinks about it.

Copernic discovered it in the 14th century. He discovored, by observing the stars that earth was turning on itself and that it wasn't flat but he never told people his discovery because he was afraid of repression. After that Galileus publicated Copernic's work and was accused of diffamation. He was burnt and history tells that when he went out of the tribunal he told " but it's turning"
