How about Billie Holiday? She was the most influential jazz singers of the 30s.

Other good choices would be Elizabeth Cady Stanton (feminist activist), Dorothy Lawrence (disguised herself as a man to fight in WWII), S.E. Hinton (Wrote The Outsiders at 15), and Giselle Model, Diane Arbus, and Cindy Sherman (all photographers). Good luck on your biograhy.
