U-Boats (U being short form for Untersee-boot, German for Underwater boat)

There were basically 3 classes of U-boats, they being short range, medium range & ocean-going types) & were powered by diesel electric engines where the subs would run on battery when submerged & having to resurface from time to time to run the diesel engine to recharge the batteries as air is needed for the diesel engine to work.

It was only in the latter part of the war that "snorkels" were developed so that diesel engines could be used submerged as the snorkel would be the only part of the vessel to stick out of the water to provide air for the engines.

The C-in-C of the submarine fleet was Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz who was also the brains behind the wolfpack tactics whish was used to counter the convoy system used by the Allies.
