Our son is 12 months old and we can not leave him alone, he constantly wants to be held. We have a room setup with lots of noise making and flashing light toys to distract him, but if he even thinks we are headed out the door for any reason, he will just start crying horrably.

We have a baby gate, and the room opens right up to our open door where he can see us in plain view, but will just keep on crying.

Can anyone suggest anything that might help?

I wish I knew a good answer for that. My son has always been like that. He had colic when he was 3 weeks old and it lasted until he was 5 months old. So we held him alot and as he got older he still cried everytime we left him alone. We couldnt even walk to the next room without him screaming. He is now 18 months old and it has gotten a little better but he still has his moments where he doesnt want us to leave him alone. I think you just have to wait it out and hope it gets better.

Let him cry... Im not saying that you should let him cry for hours on end... but if you have things to do, you have things to do... You cant let your child control your life, if you dont put a stop to it now, it will get harder as he gets older... It might take awhile, but you will adjust just like your child will adjust. if you have time, play with him, but if you have other stuff to take care of, then do that... he doesnt rule the roost. you have to show him... if you continue heeding to his crying he will continue doing it. kids that age learn by example not words... Good luck.

At 12 months he should be down and walking around. Have you tried to put him in a (bouncy) saucer or a doorway (bouncy) sling or even a walker. Otherwise, I would suggest you put him on a blanket in each room you are in.

sounds like separation axiety... also, he might just be trying to be held all the time like when he was a baby. You can let him cry it out, or let him grow it out (which could take a few years yet)

I know its harsh but I think you just have to let him cry it out. Eventually he'll realize you'll hold him when it time to hold him and play or sleep when it's the right time.
