It's not underground, it's actually on the first floor--confused yet?

When the Magic Kingdom was being built, Walt Disney wanted a way to keep every themed area separate and keep the guests from seeing the things that would take away the "Fantasy" of the whole experience--such as garbage being moved around and deliveries being made.

So, the utilidors were built before the rest of the park. That's what they're really called. Most people call them the tunnels.
Then the Seven Seas Lagoon was dug out and the dirt was put on top of the utilidor structure. Then, the park was built on top of the tunnel.

The utilidors are big enough for small vehicles to drive through. Cast members do not live there. However, there are multiple locker rooms, break rooms, rest rooms, offices, electrical rooms, elevator rooms, storage rooms, one LARGE cafeteria, and the AVAC system down there. (That's the system that sucks the garbage through the tunnel to a dumpster backstage, topside--it does exist.)

Next time you end up at Walt Disney World in Florida, take the Keys to the Kingdom tour. See Guest Relations for pricing and scheduling. Or call 407-WDISNEY.

Also, there is a great book called Mouse Tales-A Behind the Ears Look at Disneyland, by David Koenig, that has all sorts of interesting "insider" information like this.

Read the book The Art of Walt Disney. It has some material on the subject. Underground is meant to the services. As a matter of fact, the park is in the second floor;

They don't live there. My boyfrind used to work ther. They do have tunnels underground that used to be used for something before the park was built that the cast members use to cross from park to park- but according to him, it's also where the trash compacters empty, and it smells terrible.
