put toys in the cage that the hamster will play with, like wood chews, papertowel rolls. Mine seem to like it.
Gerbils are pretty lively, have you tried those?

As Kat said, put other things in the cage for it to do. Your hamster could be bored and that's why it's not so active.
You also have to remember that hamsters are nocturnal so they will sleep all day and depending on where your cage is situated, it may not have the sunlight through the day so it could think that the light in your room is the sun... My husbands hamster is like that because it's in the basement.

Some hamsters are only active at night, but you could try taking it into a safe room and letting it explore. Hamsters have a very curious nature, and this should perk him/her up. Also add toys to the cage, wheels, paper towel rolls...etc.

Your hamster probably does things...at night , while you're asleep. Theyre nocturnal, so when you're awake during the day, theyre sleeping. You get their schedules switched around to match yours but it takes a while. Also does he have a wheel? They need stuff to do in their cage, or else it could get pretty boring in there. A wheel, something to sleep in etc.

Thats what hamsters do. Rats play, rabbits play, even mice play, but hamsters sleep.
