Hello! I am renting an apartment in NY. I found one and my application has been accepted. My question is: When should I received the keys? At the moment of signing or at the beginning of the lease? I should say that I will be paying the first month and the security deposit at the moment of signing (a week before the lease begins)

You can not move in until your agreement starts. If someone lease started in the middle of the week, and they wanted to bring over items after work, I would open up the unit for you to drop off items, take measurement, etc. if the unit is currently unrented.

I would open the door for a new tenant but I would stay in the unit until they left. I would not give them the keys until the day that your lease started.

Renting to college students, we have tenants sign leases weeks to months in advance of actually moving in, so our tenants don't get the keys until the day they move in. Hell, most of the time there are other people in the apartment, or we haven't even re-keyed it until then.

Normally you would pick up the keys when you arrive to move in, at most the day before if the person holding the keys won't be around when you move in.

You should get the keys the day you are allowed to start moving in. If the place is unoccupied and doesn't need fixing up, you maybe able to get the keys early.

At the moment of signing you should recieve your keys and the landlord should go over the lease with you at that time. or either they can send you the lease and you can review, sign and return to him. keep a copy ofcourse for yourself, incase of any probs.

You should get it at signing then, unless landlord says otherwise (needs to clear out anything from previous tenant) but I highly doubt that will happen.
