First of all running Vista on minimum memory requirements isn't a good thing at all! You should at least have the recommended value of 1 Gb. (Vista itself consumes around 500 Mb of Ram with Aero enabled!).
Secondly, the main issue with Vista is that drivers are just not ready for it. Many are still in the developing stage (if they are available that is) and those that are posted for download don't give you the same facilities on XP for example...
Performance in Vista isn't better then on Xp even if Vista adopts "new" technologies which theoretically are better then those available on Xp. Look at the benchmarks for vista performance available online.. Unless you have a really strong computer you will feel the difference on Vista.
My advice is you should stick with Xp, at least for now... Part of vista's components are available on Xp as well (all except Directx 10).. But if you really want to try it, i would recommend dual booting with Xp (just in case..).

It should install ok.. being you already have a Vista capable machine.. my first suggestion would be upgrade to at least 1 gig of memory.. being you have 512mb.. you have an expansion slot both AGP.. and PCI Express 16x my I would buy a middle grade Video card when you have the money.. I'm running the Geforce 7600GS with 256mb of memory and running Vista Home Premium pretty good. I'd like to have 2 gig for better performance, but I have 1 gig.. I've just purchased a USB Flash drive and using Readyboost, Vista's program, I should see a substantial performance upgrade with a 2 gig USB Flash drive.. if what I've read is accurate.
Good Luck, I'd expect if you were to upgrade what you have now you could have a pretty good experience.

You can upgrade to vista without losing everything, but I would recommend doing what is known as a clean install, which will erase all of your files. You will need 1 GB of RAM to run Vista efficiently, but other than that your system would probably run it fine. That being said, there are still some program and driver incompatibility issues with Vista, and I would recommend holding off for another 6 months or so, til those things are worked out.

No! Do not get Windows Vista, it is not only the slowest crap ever, (It will not run well at all with 512MB of RAM, I have the same amount) but it is very glitchy as well. It messed up my hard drive and I needed a new one.. It's also a ***** to install. Yes, the upgrade will erase your files if you choose to, otherwise, it would upgrade over your XP.

Stay away from Vista at this point. It's really just a beta version being passed off as a finished product. Wait at least until the first service pack is released. Also, you'll need at least 1GB of RAM to run it efficiently when the times does come to upgrade.

Save some money for another year. Wait till Microsoft has worked out some mega flaws. Buy a decent 'Vista Ready' computer.

It's not that people do not like to change. It's just that Vista sucks for many reason.
