This is a real legal difficulty right now. Very few states really recognize same-sex marriage anyway, and Wisconsin is not one of them. If your main concerns are associated with benefits and other legal aspects that commonly go along with marriage, that will depend on your employer to some degree, and you can set up many similar legal agreements through an attorney to cover many of the legal aspects of marriage.

No, if its not legal within that state then they wont view it as legal even though it was preformed legally somewhere else.
