I know i am capable and i know i have ability but whenever i try to draw or paint i feel as if their is some type of barrier keeping me from any type of creative thought, leaving me frustrated and ready to give up. I become extremly critical of anything i create and im always unsatisfied with it. Does anyone know of any way i might be able tap into a more artistic side. Any advice at all? Any way i can figure out my style and find a type of art that is right for me? thank you...

I know how you feel... I have a tendency to get total artistic block. Basically, I just have to let myself go and keep trying. I also tend to be more creative when I'm depressed.

As for finding out your "style," you just have to keep experimenting and see what works for you. Me, personally, I discovered that drawing a pseudo-realistic, almost comic-book style is what works for me. I had to try virtually everything before I figured it out.

Good luck and I hope you get past this.

I think every artist feels like you do sometimes. Feeling frustrated, but still consumed by the need to create is what makes you an artist and not just some guy holding a pencil. Most artists are more critical of their own work than anyone else will ever be. Sometimes, when I feel creatively stagnant, I open up my sketchbook and just start moving my hand. I start out with just random lines or bad doodles, but it gets my juices going as my mind wanders and eventually I hit upon something I can use. Art is like anything else: the more you do it, the more naturally it will come to you. Keep a little pocket size sketchbook with you at all times and draw in it whenever you see something interesting. Another good thing to do is visit art galleries (not just museums, but places with contemporary art) and just look at what other artists are doing. Sometimes you come upon someone else who has solved a problem that you've been having in your own work. Hope this helps you out! Good luck!

i have the same problems. Not a lot, but enough to keep frustrating when i just did something really good, and them can't keep up the trend.
What i usually do:
I sit. Just study the world around you. pay attention to little things, and don't rush an idea. it WILL come.

I go on line and look at art. It sometimes gives me ideas, and sometimes just makes me more mad when i can't draw something as good as the person on line. It might work for u, so try it.

I also think you should just explore different media and see what works best for you. Great ideas sometimes comes when you're not even looking.

Hope you find something that suits you! Happy drawing!!!

I would suggest you check out the book "drawing from the right side of your brain" its full of great creative exercises that will help you explore both technique and style and most importantly because you are using the right side of the brain there will be less over-thinking
