Could be it also happened to a world cup football player(cant remember his name) when he scored a own goal and his team got knocked out

If you mean by if it has to do anything with Cricket, the fact that he was murdered during the 2007 World Cup means a lot to anyone into Cricket. Not to mention that he was a great coach.
For the other interpretation, it seems that one of the motives might have been the ball-tampering in the 2006 World Cup and his comment about ball-tampering. Because of some animosity, it is possible that because of Cricket, Bob Woolmer was killed.

It was the day after his team were knocked out of the World Cup - an embarrassment as they lost to Ireland, a part-time team. A lot of people were very angry.
It's too much of a coincidence not to be.
