Back in the 1950s there was a TV show called "Queen for a Day."
Each show featured 3 unfortunate women, and each one had her turn to tell her tale of woe--things like:
"My 6 children all have serious medical problems, my husband just ran off with another man, the bank is about to foreclose on the mortgage, and on the way over to the studio today i totaled my car."
The audience then voted on which woman's life was most pathetic, and the "winner" was declared "Queen for a Day," winning all sorts of appliances and groceries and other stuff to make her life a bit more tolerable.
This show was quite popular, but it always seemed just awful the way it seemed to capitalize upon the misery of these poor women--and also just terrible in the way the women seemed to be laying it on thick in trying to out-do each other in their tales of woe.
