how do these bodies of water differ? are they the same, and just have different names?

Seas are regions of oceans. The Arabian Sea is part of the Indian Ocean from the Horn of Africa to the tip of India.

the difference is that
ocean < the word is from greek and it means a great river encircling the earth
and
sea< means like a marsh
and if u picture that, it makes sense, cause seas r mostly inland and are connected with one another cause theyr all connected 2 the ocean
while oceans are all connected with one another like a huge river

They are names for the same thing. The expanse of water covering the earths surface.

Though "Sea" refers to the large expanse of water covering the earth it can often refer to large lakes but "Ocean" only refers to the large expanse of water covering the earth.

The criteria are not firm, but as mentioned, seas are smaller, and are also surrounded on three sides by land, sort of a reverse peninsula.
