Using heat and the right chemical atmosphere metals are diffused into a thin layer at the surface of the sapphire to enhance the colour of the stone. The colour in the diffused layer is very strong, but because its thin the overall effect on the sapphire is much less. Diffusion stones are a no no in gemmology an jewellery

It is laboratory enhanced. Under heat, trace elements diffuse into the crystalline matrix, making the color more vibrant.
