My rat has tons of severe scabs all over her body. Her nose and eyes have red secretion in them. She is not even two years old yet and there are currently no other rats around that could be causing these scabs. There are also no visible bugs on her. This problem has just developed in the last four days. She is acting very sickly. If I don't figure out what's wrong with her I don't think she will live much longer. Please help!!!!

Something is itching her and you need to get her th the vet. The eye and nose secretion can be caused by a respiratory infection or allergies both of which need medical treatment. Call around and find a small animal vet or ask if your present vet knowledgeable with small animal illnesses. Are you by chance using pine, aspen or cedar for the bedding? All 3 of these cause allergies, respiratory problems, and should never be used. Only use a paper type litter such as Critter Care, Care Fresh, or Yesterday's News instead. We got pet rats from the pet store and our female needed to see the vet after only 2 days, she had watery eyes and was constantly sneezing. She was allergic to the pine litter they used, by using Critter Care and some vet prescribed drops, she is much better. Also did you know that feeding a rat dried corn can make them very sick too. That they can't have tap water only non-chlorine and non-fluoridated water, it's toxic to them and especially to any unborn rat babies. I've spent many hours going through other peoples sites on rats, mice, gerbils, rabbits, and both breeds of hamsters to try and compile the best information I can. I have complied the part on feeding a rat last night and can email it to you if you'd like me to. I'm doing this so that everyone in my family will know what each pet we have can and cannot have. I can be emailed through my profile.

If you dont know and are puzzled, then take your pet to the vets ASAP I think she may have a bad case of scabies,a vet will be able to prescribe some kind of a powder or cream for your rat. good luck! rubberstampr

please take her to the vet. it could be really bad,or it could be just allergies. my baby had scabs all over and it was just allergies. but just in case, please take her. almost all vets will treat rats, contrary to popular beleif. if it is allegies you can try a few home remedies or meds.
