I don't have in-depth knowledge about what happen in 1982 World Cup. The thing I know is Italy did not perform exciting play (as usual), neither they get excellent results. But in later stages, their performance was better and better. They reached final and they beat West Germany 3-1. But I can understand when you tell Italy's play wasn't convincing, because most of the times they show defensive play. You cannot tell them to always show attacking play, because they cannot. They are not Brazil or France. It is like telling a turtle to run.
Oftentimes we pick the best team based on their play, i.e. whether they show beautiful football, attacking play, and outplay their opponents. But there are many other things that are more important, yet cannot be seen, such as determination, tactics, spirit, and also luck. But luck (or chance) alone contributes only a small part of success. Determination, persistence, preparation, and team spirit are more important in delivering results. Sometimes an 'untouchable' team can be beaten through hardwork, determination, and tactics. Just like when Johan Cruyff play for Holland, they were superior with their Total Football. But then in final they faced an iron-willed team, i.e. West Germany which was lead by Franz Beckenbauer. And we all know the result: Holland has never won World Cup, but until today, Germany has won 3 times.
Regarding latest World Cup, perhaps the headbutt incident happened because of the 'intelligence' of Materazzi. I should admit also that France performed more convincing play in the final. If Zidane were not red carded, perhaps France has won. But if we go through both team's road to final, we should ask: which one delivered better results, France or Italy?
1. In the group stage, Italy won twice and drew once. Despite national scandal, and 'referee's help' they delivered good results and showed determination in quarter-final and semi-final. France had to struggle with their ageing squad before they qualified. Football pundits also questioned France's ability to reach final. They had difficulty in scoring goals. Against Brazil, they were lucky that Henry could score a goal because off Roberto Carlos' mistake, in spite of Brazil's dull play.
2. In final, actually they were helped also by referee's decision. If we see from correct angle, when Materazzi rushed to Malouda, he actually didn't make any contact. But referee gave penalty for France. Zidane the executor also almost missed the penalty. I am sure you saw the ball hit the bar before bounced into the goal. So, it is the matter of who can make the most of chance.
3. Moreover, Italy's coach Lippi is more reputable, more experienced, and smarter than Domenech. So, in my opinion there is no need to question whether Italy deserved the World Cup. Well, I can understand that many people see Italy as 'Darth Vader' of football, because of their way of play. But we can't change a turtle into a rabbit, right?

82 France would have won if not for a terrible non call by the ref. I think France outplayed Italy in 06, but ehh, penalty kicks decide games.

Lippi is the Master of Tacticle.
If you got team which is not powerfully strong, you must use your brain dud.................all teams in World Cup can be considered as a good team but the brains differ them.
You are so bias, how could you think Zizou did n't deserve a card after all.

Michele Platini, the great French player said, "This is soccer, not figure skating---you don't get anything for artistic impression." They did what they had to do to win the games they had to win, and that's all that matters. I was pulling for the French, but I say congratulations to Italy.
