Yes, you got it. Don't lay on you back and elevate both your legs at the same time!! That would certainly cause you spine problems!

Here's the scoop. Unless your baby is having intrauterine growth retardation, or some other circulation problem, sleep whatever way is comfortable unless you are sleeping on the ground or hard surface (some futons have inadequate padding). Sleeping on your back does reduce the blood flow from your vena cava (main body vein), but this isn't generally a problem. However, if you smoke or have any circulation problems already, I'd really follow the sleeping on the left side advice to maximize blood flow since these situations tend to reduce it.

So, now you are sleeping on your back. You only need a folded blanket to elevate your ankles. 4 or 5 inches should do it unless you've been told otherwise by your doctor.

Laying on the back and right side tilts the uterus back and cuts of air supply to the baby through the umbilical cord, lying on the left side is suppose to prevent this, I have only heard the legs up thing when you blood pressure drops, or if youare feeling retention in your legs, they say the best is to lay down on your left side with a pillow between your legs or if you have a cuddly husband put the top leg over his if you are huggng him from behind, works for me !! Getting use to layingon the left side is horrible I wake up with a dead arm all the time, but it really helps getting use to it in early pregnancy. They say the last few weeks of the pregnancy its better to sleep sitting up, it is suppose to help the lungs of the baby form, however that works, there are so many thigns they say though, I think laying on your back is ok for a while just make sur eyou roll over on your left side after a while

best of luck

When you are sitting keep your feet elevated above your heart if possible. When sleeping sleep on your left side with a pillow between your legs. If you must lay on your back for a short time put 2 pillows under your knees to prop your legs up. I was on bedrest for a few mo last summer and this is what i had to do. i hope this helps you good luck.

They say that cuz your uterus tips back and can cut of the main blood vessel . You can lay on your back just dont do it for long periods of time.
