The ban on imports of bio-fuel is a benefit to the producers of US made bio-fuel which is made from corn, so benefits Midwest farmers, ADM, etc, and to some extent oil producers. Most other sugar cane tariffs are for the benefit of sugar beet producers. As in the case of all tariffs consumers will pay higher prices. An indirect cost is arises from the fact that the foreign producers of sugar cane are mostly in impoverish nations. The extreme poverty in the world ends up costing US taxpayers in aid and military interventions.

Tariffs harm consumers and the only benefit gained is by the few US producers of sugar. Their gain is at the expense of the rest of the economy.

No tariffs make any sense. They all rip off the consumer.

One simple answer. The oil companies and our government are partners. That is why we are at war right now. That is also why there has been technology for years for cars to run w/o oil products, but for some reason that hasn't happened yet. Of course a high tariff is being levied - they want to discourage and make it too expensive to have an alternative.
