If it's plugged into a wall, why does it need that power supply thing?

umm but y cant it just be plugged into the motherboard and have everything else get its power from the motherboard

The wall outlet provides 120 Volts Alternating Current (VAC) (US & Canada) or 240 VAC (most other countries).
The integrated circuits operate on low voltage DC (5 or 3 VDC) and some parts may need 12 VDC. The power supply ("a wall wart" on some older computers, such as the Atari and Commodore) reduces the juice.

The power supply is actually a power converter. The computer runs on several diffrent voltages at the same time.
Some of the systems in a computer run on 12v others at 5v and yet others at 115v.

the Power supply, has differnest volt levels.... not all componetsn in siide of the PC use 12 volts or 3 volts!
The power supply breaks down all those stuff, its like a big fuse box!, you best be thank full for it

LOL the plug thats in your wall..is directly ran to your powersupply where it is dispearsed to your hardware.
if there were no powersuppy there would be about 5-6 different plugs in your electric socket

lol well its so each component gets the correct amount of power outer wise you would see big flames coming out of your computer... computers aren't the only thing that have power supplies T.V's have them and a lot of outer things as well...

Home voltage is AC{alternating currnet} you puter runs on DC{direct current} beats having to wind up our puters! Hahahaha
