I have a friend, he is going through a rough period in his life. He is over 40 and is feeling l ike he is dying, becoming a shell of a person. He finds no joy in things that used to bring him great joy. He feels empty, lost, sinking, he just can't find joy or connection to anything and it is hurting his realtionship.
1st has anyone experienced this? 2nd can he salvage what used to be a good relationship? 3rd should he seek professional help?

Hon, there's no question in my mind that your friend is suffering from serious depression. Having been there myself, I can identify those as classic symptoms.
PLEASE encourage him to see a psychiatrist. He can certainly salvage his relationship, but he needs to help himself first. I am living proof of the effectiveness of anti-depressants; Paxil is the one that works for me, but his doctor will decide what's best for him.
There's no shame in seeking help for depression; please tell him that. There are millions of us who suffer from it, and help is available. Best of luck to you both.

1. I've known friends who have suffered deep depressions.
2. He needs to salvage his own life before being concerned about other people or relationships.
3. Professional help would be a good idea.

Yes I went thru the same things. Then I was diagnosed Major Depression.
#3 should be next because until he stabilizes on a med his relationship will continue to spiral downward.
Absolutely get professional help. This can only get worse.

Has something happened in his life to make him feel this way,Was there a death of a good friend, or family. It sounds like he is in a depression, and needs some professional help. Try talking to him, ask him what he thinks of himself, ask him what he wants to do for the rest of his life. Tell him you love him, and are concerned for him. Let him know that he is not alone, you will be there to help him, but he has to let you know what to do. Just be there for him.

I took a suicide prevention class and those are alot of signs, it sounds like he suffers from depression which is a bad chemical balance there is medication he could take for it, I dont know much about it personally, sometimes i just think people are being stubborn and need to stop taking all the good things they have for granted but one of my friends killed himself and he had a great life, he was just 17, but he suffered from depression.

Try counselling or going to a doctor. He may be suffering from depression or anxiety. Even though I am not over 40, I have had this happen to me. I am doing a lot better with an antidepressant
