Honestly I never understood it , yet people say it when a loved one dies , when someone is missing , when something terrible has happened to someone or even my neighbor who said she was sorry when she found out her sisters son was gay . What is the point of saying sorry , you didn't cause whatever it was to happen . Am I right ?

It's just a mean of saying you are sympathetic to their situation. The opposite would be to say "I am glad". Mostly though, it's just etiquette.
I feel the same way about saying "How are you?" when you see someone. They don't really care, it's more of a habit.

Maybe it means they are sorry that the person they are consoling are suffering while they are not, and they are sorry that they are fortunate enough not so suffer, which seems kind of backwards. I think it has just become a conventional way to express sorrow without being to pretentious, it lets the other person know you are concerned, and puts less pressure on you to come up with an original lament.

Similar to "how are you?", it is a socially accepted way to express regret, and even though it is compulsory, people accept it because it is a socially accepted way to keep things on an even keel I guess.

It is just a way to convey compassion, sympathy, love, condolences, etc. It's also short & sweet - when people are going through rough times, they don't always feel like hearing a lot of talk or even doing much talking themselves.

Sorry does not mean you committed an offense. Maybe better said, I feel badly for you.
Since we all what we mean, let it be.

"I'm sorry" does not mean you accept blame for whatever happened, it indicates your regret that someone else is in pain-the long form would be "I'm sorry that happened" or I'm sorry you're sad".
Thus, you are wrong. Unless you aren't sorry.
