Ruth's story is one of the few in the Bible with a female lead character. She is also one of the dozen or so women in the Bible who are actually named. This tells the reader that the story has significant importance to the guys who decided to include it in the final compilation.

When writing your paper, you'll have to decide if you want to look at the story in the context of Bible times or modern times. That should be a good springboard to answering your own question.
