what's the difference between short ram intake and cold air intake?

Cold air doesn't necessarily increase performance or mileage. While colder air is denser, packing extra O2 into your cylinder only helps if you can pack more gas in, and burn it efficiently. That's going to be a function of the fuel injection system, which may or may not be able to meter in sufficient quantities of fuel. Furthermore, fuel doesn't atomize as well in cold air as in hot air. For this reason, your car has been engineered by someone who knew his business. The intake air is a combination of hot and cold, which is dynamically blended to maintain a fairly constant temperature. This assures ideal atomization. The only purpose of a cold air system is to make ignorant nits think you have a souped up engine.

A ram tube is designed to take advantage of the inertia of air moving through the manifold. When an intake valve opens, air is drawn in through the manifold. when it closes, air inside the manifold continues moving, resulting in the air becoming compressed. By changing the length of the intake tract, this compression effect can be tuned to maximize at the point the valve opens. Unfortunately, the tuning is very RPM dependent, so a given tube may or may not have effect at an engine speed you care about. Further advantage can be obtained by tweaking the shape of the ram tube's openning. A "horn" shape will produce much smoother (hence denser) airflow than a simple square end pipe. Selection of a ram tube must be made on an engine dyno, with specific knowlege of what operating parameter you are trying to optimize. You can't just buy one out of the box and expect a miracle.

More important than either cold air or ram geometry is the air plenum, which plays an important role in smoothing airflow. Aftermarket intake systems often omit the plenum, on the assumption that it's just a box that holds the air filter. But it's volume in relation to the displacement of the motor is important, as is it's shape. If you examine the stock air filter housing on any car, you will find that it has a very subtle design.

With few exceptions, the intake modifications offered in the aftermarket are pure trash. As they say in Detroit, if it doesn't work, chrome it! Save your money for something important.

A cold air intake is a system used to bring down the temperature of the air going into a car for the purpose of increasing the power of the internal-combustion engine. Users with forced induction engines often opt for short ram intakes because compressors adjacent to the engine, especially turbochargers, heat up and negate much of the benefits of a cold air intake.

A cold air intake or CAI takes in air into a filter at a location that is outside of the engine compartment (like between the inner and outer fenders, or behind the headlights) and a short ram intake just replaces your stock airbox with an open element filter. This is usually inside the engine compartment.

A short ram intake it just that ,short. It is commonly known as a filter on a stick. The tubing used will typically extend the filter to the area of the stock air box. A cold air intake typically has a second piece of tubing that extends down past the location of the stock air box and places the filter just in front of the wheel and just behind the front bumper cover.

Short ram intakes take air from the engine bay, whereas cold air intakes are longer, and get air from places away from the warm engine bay, such as the wheelwell, or front air dam. Colder air is denser, and therefore will increase performance more than just a short ram intake, generally.

The short intake gets it's air from under the hood where it is hot. Cold air intakes get air from in front of the radiator or from inside of the front fender. Cooler air is ALWAYS better.

The style...that is about it...
The ram air intakes are more for the cars whose filters are above the carb or TBI, like on older cars. The Cold Air Intakes are more for the offset filters, like on civics and accords and stuff like that. That is the only difference.

the short ram stays and takes in air from the engine bay which is hotter air and will get hot air in the combustion chamber and hot increase pre detonation and doesnt allow the fuel to fully burn
the cold air intake leads out of the engine bay into the bumber on the passenger side it takes in colder air and allows cooler temp for combustion so the fuel fully burns and you will get betters gas mileage and more horses
