Why did it take so long for him to reach out and stop the suffering?

Frank Rich's piece might have been titled "Bush's Bullshit Floods the Superdome". Rich is far less uncomplimentary toward the clueless, lying president, than many people, perhaps the majority across the country have now become. The failures, however, are much deeper than that of the symbolic head of wealth and power in the United States. The failures are endemic of the United States' corporate-state system which is one of unbridled greed, wealth and power. In the tragedy that is New Orleans, the priorities of the greedy for-profit system are now self-evident. As horrified viewers witnessed bloated fellow-Americans floating face down in raw sewage, the established capitalist order continues to take time out from its news coverage to sell us penis enlarging products on national television. On satellite radio, news of the tragedy and of $6.00 per gallon gasoline is interrupted by advertisements selling opportunities on how to make a killing in "fuel futures" by hoarding gasoline and home heating fuel until the winter. Imagine it. As the people in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are getting shafted by the system, the system is offering them the opportunity to shaft each other. Making a profit on your neighbor's misery is good for business. God bless the "free market".

NO! It was our Governor who was laughing - that's why she isn't running again. The true citizens of Louisiana believe in helping themselves - thank you very much. I lost $10,000 plus because of Katrina. My business was unable to open for almost two weeks. We did not ask for a dime from federal or state government. When we were able to re-open we just worked harder to make up for the loss. Get a clue - I don't blame President Bush - why should you?

Oh, for pete's sake.
He did great in Florida for our 3 major hurricanes in 13 months. You know darn well that Katrina was messed up
on many levels STARTING with NO's mayor and LA's governor.
Now, do you have a real question or do you just like being a jerk?

I don't think that he was laughing, but I sure don't think he was helping. In the end, I'm a independent... I vote on which president I think has a good prospective... like abortion is wrong. But whatever. I don't like Bush, it's my opinion. But if he TRULY was a GOOD president... then he would IMMEDIATELY start helping as SOON as something happens... not days AFTER it happens.

NO. I think that he viewed them as poor people who were not registered voters and who were on public assistance (welfare) and his goal was to keep them inside the city via National Guard Troops, as alleged by victims, in order to kill them off so that the Social Security Administration and the Welfare Dept. would not have to pay these people to live. Pure human evil. His goal is to get rid of the less fortunate people because the earth is overpopulated.

Of course not! Did he fail miserably in responding to the disaster? Absolutely. But there's a huuuuge difference between that incompetence and actually taking pleasure in the sufferings of others.

He'd have to think about the suffering of others to take pleasure in it, and I get the feeling he doesn't think much about it either way.
