Yeah, the answer is C. In the example sentence, deep is meant as intense or profound. "Garrett felt "intense" sympathy..." Profound could also be substituted.

The word deep in A means depth, bottomless. Hm...I guess both B and D could also mean depth. B could also be "Mr. Jones took a 'big' breath."
