Communism and socialism are economic models.

Communism proposes that all property should be owned by the community (the govt) and usable by everyone in the community. Communism works in the small scale when it is voluntary, but breaks down when forced on the large scale. So far, the most common examples have been totalitarian govts (China, USSR) that have tried to force it.

Socialism is a less-severe economic that proposes the govt control resource production and most manufacturing, as well as provide most social services (health care, retirement social security, welfare, etc.). But socialism allows for private ownership of consumer property.

Most modern western contrives (including the US) practice some blend of capitalism and socialism.

Marxism is a political theory that says society should (and naturally does) go through various govt and economic forms as it evolves, from anarchy through socialism and eventually to an enlightened form of community property ownership (communism). So far, it's just a theory because no society has progressed through the entire spectrum in order.

Marxism is after Karl Marx, who wrote das kapital in 1850 or so,Communism was morph of Marxism and Lenin after 1914 or so,and both are economic systems. socialism has little if anything to do with either of those two ideas, except among those don't know what either of them are, but like to blow smoke socialism is in most cases a democratic , governmental system with a socialist economy, and that is usually a mixture of capitalism, and socialist responsibility.
Social democracy is the system in most countries of Europe and much of South America.

Communism - you pretend to work, the gov't pretends to pay you.

Socialism - you pretend to work, the gov't pretends to pay you, then taxes you 60%.

Marxism- the philosopy which spawned communism and socialism. Formulated in the 19th century by an intinerant Euopean laborer with a drinking problem (Karl Marx), this philosophy defines Utopia as a place where all people contribute the same and obtain the same to/from society. No private ownership, capitalism is evil, etc.

It was essentially a radical reaction to the anomie caused by the Industial revolution (rapid transition of traditional rural societies to industial ones). Marx's book (Das Kapital) contains all types of poorly formed jingoisms which still haunt us today. Most have been incorporated to the platform of the Democratic Party--here are some modern examples "use excess oil profits to combat global warming (redistribute the wealth of millions of investors in private oil companies to fund a program for the "greater good," as definded by the Party); "Invest in infrastructure" (My favorite Bill Cintonism--means raise taxes to fund government programs).

Marxism generally refers to a social theory based on the work of Karl Marx. Communism was sometimes seen as the end result of Marx theory although he never really described its particulars. Its broad goals were to establish a classless society with common ownership of the means of production. In reality these economic goals were forsaken as ruthless politicians gathered unto themselves dictatorial powers. In many cases these regimes were among the most brutal of the 20th century.
Communism is viewed as a branch of the broader socialist movement. Socialism, however, evolved -- particularly in Europe -- into a nonviolent movement aimed at reforming capitalism rather than overthrowing it.
Marxism, despite its secular nature, is rooted in European Christianity. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs," was lifted from 17th century Christian communism. Its basis is the New Testament, particularly the Acts of the Apostles where Luke taught that the believers held possessions in common and distributed them as needed.
Beware of simple explanations. The prejudices of the one explaining tends to cloud the picture. Political and economic systems invariably become corrupted from within.
You underestimate yourself. This is not a stupid question. More people should seek a better understanding of this matter.

What? Marxism isn't clever? Marx and Engels laid the commencing place of Marxism , it fairly is dialectical materialism, and the approach of social diagnosis generic as historic materialism. Marxism holds that type conflict is the imperative element of all social exchange. "The background of all hitherto latest society is the background of sophistication conflict". Are you speaking approximately Marxism or Anarchism ?
