A former kingdom, Castile (Spanish: Castilla; usually pronounced Cast-EEL in English), gradually merged with its neighbors to become the Kingdom of Spain. in modern-day Spain, it comprises the regions of Castilla y León in the north-west, and Castilla-La Mancha in the center of the country. Modern Spanish monarchs are numbered according to the system of Castile.

Castile's name means land or region of castles, in reference to the castles built in the area to consolidate the Christian re-conquest from the Moors.

Historically, the Castilian Kingdom and people were the architects of the Spanish State by a process of expansion to the South against the Muslims and of marriages, wars, assimilation, and annexation of their smaller Eastern and Western neighbours. From the advent of the Bourbon Monarchy following the War of the Spanish Succession until the arrival of parliamentary democracy in 1977, the Castilian language alone had an official status in the Spanish State.

Previously an eastern county of the kingdom of León, Castile in the 11th century became an independent realm with its capital at Burgos and later Valladolid, and the leading force in the northern Christian states' 400-year Reconquista ("reconquest") of central and southern Spain from the Muslim rulers who had dominated the peninsula since the 8th century......

Hi. Castille was and is one of the historical centers of political, linguistic, trading, cattle movement, culture - dense cities as well as universities of the peninsula. It basically ocupies the main meseta (mesa - elevated palins tipe of territory that is around 400 to 700 meters above sea level (not counting the mountains) occupies the central plains of the peninsula Iberica or Iberian peninsula.
Used to be a county - Condado first Count - Fernan Gonzalez-
and settle land during the reconquista, to reconquer land away from muslims areas where awarded by Kings of Leon, Navarra, Lords of Asturias etc. Eventually became a Kingdom and finally joined Leon to start the reign of Castille which eventually extended al the way down to Andalucia. Isabel of Castille the catholic queen married Fernando I of argon. Fernado was Fernado de Trastamara, old family of kings of Castille dethroned during the reign of Juan II, and the family, los Trastamara, escaped to Aragon where eventually they rose up to Kinghood, desplazing the older Catalan Counts - Aragon & Valecian royal Families in the crown. When the couple married they joined Castille to Aragon and started the final push to reconquer Spain and spelled jews and muslims who did not want to convert to christianism hence the name Catolicos: or universal, from Katolikos (greek), one Kingdom, One language, One faith, same philosophy that the Catholic church had just more local and not so ambitious at least for some time. It was composed - moving from north to south and east to west (returning west to east after Soria jeast ump to Avila west) as land was reconquered: Logroño, Palencia,Burgos, Zamora, Salamanca, Avila, Segovia, Soria, Toledo, Madrid, Guadalajara, Cuenca, & Ciudad Real. Named castille for the Castles built as conquer advanced to settle and protect settler much as the forts role in the conquest of the west in US, just more inexpugnable and permanent buildings still most of them around after centuries of wars even survived modern war
