Why do so many women (girls) go to the ER to have a pregnancy test??

My insurance WILL NOT cover me going to the ER unless I call my regular doctor first.

AND my regular doctor OB/GYN WOULD NEVER send me to an ER for a pregnancy test.

She'd tell me to take one at home.

What gives??

I have never heard of this unless the woman is in pain she shouldn't be clogging up the ER when she can just go to the store and buy a home pregnancy test. It will probably end up costing 3 times more than going to the doctor also. Maybe it is the people on public aid and they cant afford a Dr. or a home test ,who knows.

Well i had my Pregnancy test done at the ER, but i didn't know i was going to find out if i was pregnant or not. I went because i was so sick, and had not been able to eat or drink for 3 days. I went to the ER because i had no insurance so a private physician was out of the question. And when i got there, they ran some test and told me i was sick because i was 6 weeks pregnant. ::LOL:: So that is why this girl did it, not sure about the others. Maybe it's because they don't have insurance either. And at the ER if you don't have a job, the bill can be voided out, cause you have no way of paying it. And even if you do have to end up paying it, you have some time and can do a payment plan, where as at a PCP you would have to pay an upfront cost plus whatever else was due later.

I've never heard of anyone doing this. It sounds quite silly to me too. Maybe they went to the ER not knowing they were pregnant but had severe stomach pains (aka contractions) and the ER doctor gave them a pregnancy test?

Because the ER usually does a blood test, which is more accurate. Or they are just being cheap and don't feel like buying one. Some insurance companies will pay for you to go w/o calling your doctor first.

I think people who go to the er for pregnancy test and the common cold and such are people without insurance. The ER will take you insurance or not. Many doctors do not take uninsured patients for obvious reasons.

What a waste of doctors time. They should refuse to do them, send the women home to do HPT, and get on with saving lives. Women who go there for a pregnancy test are stupid!

i went to the e.r for pains, and i asked them to do a pregnancy test becuse i thought i might be, they took it, found out i was pregnant and then did all the tests they needed to make sure it wasnt eptopic, or a misscarriage or anything else. so women dont have a obgyn to go to and when its 3 am in the morning and your in pain where else can they turn?

My guess is that many people panic and just have no other though than to go to the ER.
At least they have it about them to see a doctor!
