on a saab 900 how do you tell what is the low pressure side

Well, the cap should have an indicator on it...L for low, and H for high...if not, the low and high sides are two different sizes, so switching doesn't happen...still lost??? The low side is usually closest to your dryer, which is that aluminum thing by your firewall...

The low side is always the larger tube.In any application the suction side is always bigger.A/C work for 20 years,electrical for 29 years.

The lines come from your compressor. The low side goes into the passenger compartment and the high side goes to the condensor by your radiator.
