Babylonian astronomers at some point during the 1st millennium BC divided the ecliptic into twelve equal zones of celestial longitude to create the first known celestial coordinate system: a coordinate system that boasts some advantages over modern systems (such as equatorial coordinate system or ecliptic coordinate system). The zodiac is also understood as a region of the celestial sphere that includes a band of eight arc degrees above and below the ecliptic, and therefore encompasses the paths of the Moon and the naked eye planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn). The classical astronomers called these planets wandering stars to differentiate them from the fixed stars of the celestial sphere (Ptolemy).
Strictly speaking, the eventual culmination of the classical zodiac includes signs (also constellations) that are not all represented by animals (e.g., Libra, Virgo, Gemini). However, the term probably derives from earlier conceptions of the constellations along the ecliptic as sculpted animals. As with the Chinese zodiac, Indo-European astrologers understand the movement of the planets and the Sun through the zodiac as a method to explain and predict events on Earth.
The modern western astrological signs are simplifications of conventional pictorial representations of the signs, used since Hellenistic times. The characters are encoded in unicode at positions U+2648 to U+2653 (hexadecimal numbers): Aries , Taurus , Gemini , Cancer , Leo , Virgo , Libra , Scorpio , Sagittarius Capricorn , Aquarius , Pisces . The glyph representation of these characters will depend on the font in which they are displayed.

Actually the zodiac is just a collection of signs that belong to certain constellations in the sky like an imaginary belt around the earth. It derives from Astrology.
People often think that Astrology and Horoscopes are the same thing but they are not. They read horoscopes from newspapers, magazines, or hear predictions on TV and instantly relate it to Astrology. Horoscopes are only "show business" and have nothing to do with the actual ancient art and science of Astrology which by the way has been around for more than 5,000 years.
Many ancient civilizations noticed the influence of the planets on earth especially on the human race, and that is how everything started, but it is really hard to tell who was truly the first civilization to take official note even thou most people would agree it was somewhere around Ancient Greece.
Wow.. I should be a writer! lol! :)

"By 2,000 BC, the Egyptians and Mesopotamians marked the seasons by the constellations we now call Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. But the marking of seasons by constellations may go back to 5,000 BC.[5] The division of the ecliptic into the zodiacal signs originates perhaps in Babylonian ("Chaldean") astronomy as early as the 1st millennium BC (likely during Median/"Neo-Babylonian" times) (Powell 2004)."

It is believed that the Babylonians may have invented it, but no one is certain.
Basically they saw that as a year passed, it looked like a giant sphere has rotated one turn (while the Earth was in the center). The sky was divided into 12 pieces and each piece was name for a group of stars (a constellation) that they effectively connected the dots in a shape inside of each of the 12 pieces.

the stars, my dear....
Astrology is one of the most ancient philosophies still in existence in this world. Some estimate it to be more than 3,000 years old but recent study of more esoteric beliefs place it further back into the clouded past of human history. In ancient times , and up until today Astrology has been used to predict what happens to countries, the outcome of wars, economic trends and much more about personal course of actions as well.

the zodiac is based on where you are born in relation to the stars. It is based on star locations from hundreds of thousands of years ago.
I am not sure who designed it but I think it was the Hindu or something like that.

the ancient greeks or even earlier, the babylonians maybe. the believed the stars orbited the earth and therefore everything about earth had to do with the stars and named certain ones after their gods creating the constellations. they used these to map the earth for voyages.
