Mine used to get rusted, so i had a quick release where I could take it out and buff it from time to time. I found a thin coat of WD-40 or a bit of motor oil helped to slow the process.
Didn't tend to bother me much, until the red dripped down into the eyes and made everything a bit more menacing.

No. Rust is caused by oxidation. As long as the metal in within your body, free oxygen does not get a chance to react with it to cause rust. Additionally, most metal rods and plates used surgically are either non-ferous, or stainless steel, so even if exposed to oxygen, they would not rust.
