guitars and whatnot all. And not just the young ones, even people in their 30's have no taste in real music anymore. Just give me a glass of merlot and Frank, or Chopin or any of the greats not this modern junk!

The same question has been asked by middle aged adults for ages. During the turn of the 20th century, Jazz became popular in the form of ragtime, blues and later swing. During the 50's, parents thought that Elvis was obscene with his pelvic contortions. Jerry Lee Lewis offended many because of his marriage to his 14 year old cousin and Little Richard had to tame down his Tutti Fruiti (original lyrics included the line "goddamn tutti fruit good booty" but was rewritten by Dorothy La Bostrie).. Many persons in the south were offended by rock and roll.

The beatles and the British invasion made adults shake their heads in wonder as well. Ed Sullivan at one time refused to have the Rolling Stones (and he didn't want Elvis on his show at first in 1956) on his show.

The psycadelic era had lsd and mary jane. The Greatful Dead and Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix looked like they came from Outer space.

Then Woodstock with flower power and Led Zeppelin ushering in Heavy metal.

The 70's had punk rock and 80's with madonna and Prince and 90's with Nirvana,TLC, 2Pac and others.

So the older generation has always questioned the musicality of the younger generation. They might not appreciate Mozart or Brahms but that is their loss. I try not to be narrow minded and like all rock, most country, some rap, much indie rock, lots of blues and jazz. I just turned 40 and I think of how lucky we are that there is an infinite number of possibilities to music. With IPods,CD's,local and satellite radio, all tastes are catered. I don't like the fact that Rap and hip hop has dominated the scene but rock is where jazz was 50 years ago, marginalized but still a loyal following.

The old saying: "The more things change, the more they stay the same" applies here.

I am 30 and listen every type of music from Rap, to metal, to electronica, to even Frank. There are so many different types of music because people get different thing from music, whether it's the beat, overall feeling, or lyrics, we're all wired a bit differently and have different taste in music.

Even with music I don't like, I can appreciate the artistic value or angle the musician is taking. The day all music genres starts sounding the same is the day music loses it's significance to me. My mood helps to determine which music I play.

I praise the younger generation for being more open minded to different music.

I don't think you should criticize rock every music has something different that makes it attractive to some individuals I personally love punk rock because of the sound of the music and the message within the lyrics but I like other styles of music as well jazz, classical, and just about everything else I just don't think you should criticize any type of music because you might end up likeing it

well every generation thinks the generation younger than it has louder, uglier, noisier, worse music than they had.
I personally don't think that your statement is true, from what I've noticed a lot of younger kids are getting into classic rock (Led Zeppelin, Queen, Jimi, etc) and the really good modern bands right now are the ones following the formula layed down by the greats (The Killers come to mind)
and if you don't like that answer...why do you like such mellow music that you can't get up and dance to like a madman?

I'm sorry, but electric is not junk. The Beatles were electric. Bob Dylan went electric. Chuck Berry was even electric! If you think THEY'RE junk, I doubt you should be posting on any music board anywhere.

And maybe your judgments of music wouldn't be so skewed if you listened to it without the Merlot.

THis is really kind of humorous ... sorry ... but I recall MY parents saying things like that, and I am 50!!!

I , too, enjoy classic music, but gimme some good rock n roll or electric blues, too!

And I agree .. not all "music" really is ....

EDIT:
Electric Guitar is NOT a "childish instrument", LOL .. if you think so, try playing one!! My hubby is a professional rock and blues electric guitarist, a very talented and excellent one, and I would never say what he does is childish! It is awesome ... and he has been commended and endorsed by the likes of Lenny Breau, Kenny Rogers, and Burton Cummings.
