petrol engines?

my car is a vw polo with a 1.4 cl petrol engine. my question is...how long does a petrol engine last for? and what are the ageing signs that i need to look out for
my car has done 118 k miles

Maybe 200,000. Watch for increased oil consumption, smoke out the pipe, lack of power and noise where there was none before.

If you take well care of the car, the engine will last you almost 300 K miles. I have had gas (petrol) engines last this long in my cars before.

They CAN do 200,000 miles so you are only half way there.
