Fehling's solution has two liquids (one, a solution of Copper sulfate and the other made with Rochelle salt, potassium sodium tartrate tetrahydrate and Sodium hydroxide). The two parts are combined just before use.

The reaction involves the formation of Copper (II) oxide which is reduced to Copper (I) oxide in the presence of Aldehydes (including reducing sugars).

Benedict's solution is a single solution of Copper (II) sulfate dissolved in a Sodium carbonate/Sodium citrate buffer. The soluble Copper +2 ion is directly reduced to the Copper (I) oxide with reducing sugars and aliphatic aldehydes.
