I am trying to learn to recognize different types of common wood. I am looking for a site that would show pictures of woods cut in boards with their names by them to be able to learn how to distiguish between them

do what i did . when i started as an antique restorer apprentice so that i could learn all the woods i contacted a veneer company . they have sample pieces of real woods and sent me ( for a small fee ) a whole pile all labelled . ( far better than a book with pictures ) i still have them to this day ,25 years on. over 100 of them and i have added to the collection with my own samples. they are like a big pack of playing cards .
i also have plenty of books and the one i would reccommend is 'the world of wood' it has a very comprensive listing of all woods and their properties

Go buy a set of new drill bits and for drilling old wood you will get on better with steel drilling drill bits. Start small and work up to the hole size you need.l A variable speed drill is another esential piece of kit.

Better wood it be if you went to a builders yard and looked at it firsthand rather than in pictures. If you do find it , appreciate the knowledge as well.

I like woodchip's idea, but here's one site with some good basic info and photos:
http://www.virginiagalleries.com/wood-recog.htm

and another website with lots of grain photos:

Probably more in these links too:

Good question... I've wanted a lesson or reference before too!
