Most scales are structured with steps (years of service) and columns (educational credits and degrees). To move up you need to complete a year of service satisfactorily; to move over you need to have additional credits above a Bachelor's or an advanced degree.

1. Experience. Most qualify for yearly raises. The highest tenured teachers are generally well-paid.
2. Education. Teachers that go back to school part-time to get Master's Degrees will generally be compensated more.
3. Changing schools. Sometimes going to a more affluent school district can raise your salary. Teaching in college/university can raise your income level as well, and leading summer research programs.

When I was in high school I head a teacher who called himself "Dr. Von." He claimed to be German, and he claimed to have a Ph.D. He got paid more because of his alleged possession of a doctorate in math. But the principal of the school investigated and found out that he was lying. He didn't have a Ph.D. in math, and he wasn't really German: he was a Jew. He was also lying about being married to the woman he was living with.
