Usually landlords need to have a key so that they can let in a service man if repairs are necessary. At my condo the require a key in the office in the event that there is a plumbing problem and they need to shut off the water. As a landlord, I always wanted to have a key in the event it was necessary to resolve a problem. Typically the landlord is required to notify you 24 hours in advance if they have to gain access to your place, unless it's an emergency.

It's not required, but it's perfectly legal for him or her to be able to access the place you are renting. There is usually a provision in your lease that says something along the lines of "landlord has the right to enter the premises with sufficient notice for purpose of inspection, etc." though the language varies dramatically from lease to lease. Ask for a copy of your lease if you don't already have one and look for a relevant provision.

First of all...it's not your place. It belongs to the landlord and yes he is entitled to a key to HIS property.

They are allowed to have one, for emergency purposes.
By "allowed" they can make it a requirement in the lease.
