For one, black people CREATED rock and roll. For two, I grew up in a lower middle class black neighborhood in CA and ALL the kids liked rock and roll before rap made it big. I don't have as much interest in rock as the avg. white guy, but I do enjoy a catchy rock song and always have.
Another reason would be that todays rock seems to incorporate a lot of hip hop style which has made it easier for today's blacks to identify with it.

I'm definitely not "ghetto" and I've never been anywhere close to one, but why does being black mean I can't like rock or I can't dress a certain way? Especially in high school kids of all races get caught up in dressing like their favorite music artists. I went through a semi punk rock phase, but then I got over it and just started dressing like me again. If white people can like hip hop or rap, I don't see the issue with blacks liking rock. And contrary to popular belief, blacks started rock anyway but music and clothing styles really shouldn't be limited to specific races.
edit: um to the random person who commented on me, so that one song means what exactly? oh yea, nothing. Go do a little research instead of being ignorant.

A black person is not defined by what music they listen to. And you said we're known for rap, that is true, but Rock n Roll was also created by black people. And have you heard most rap today; most of it is trash... to find quality hip hop you need to search kind of hard. I absolutely love old school rap, and I love rock, love jazz, I love alternative... but my all time favorite is R&B... all those music genres I listed were Black Influenced; if not created by someone of color. And again a person’s ethic group is not categorized by what they listen to. A black person who loves heavy metal is no less black than a person who loves rap.

I think your question demonstrates a sweeping dismissal of so much of rock history. Black musicians laid down the foundations of rock, only to have it co-opted by the likes of elvis presley and pat boone. Black artists have had an enormous significance within US rock/pop music. Rock is not an inherently "white" or "black" thing, and I think it could be useful to examine the rigid cultural stereotypes regarding what it means to be black or white, including what kind of music one listens to.

I think black people have always liked rock, maybe you're just noticing. When I was in middle school and so on, black folks liked rock just not as many who liked rap and r&b. And that was like 10 years ago.

Let's not forget that black people started rock music. Personally I'm not really into rock, but there are a few songs out that I like.
