My son is 6 months old and won't fall asleep initally without the pacifer in his mouth. What are some options to wean him? He's also teething. Should I keep the pacifier until the tooth breaks through or just get rid of it?

He is only 6 months let him keep it for a little while longer. My son stopped using the pacifier completely at 10 months and he had 4 teeth. Some babies will stop sucking the pacifier on their own. My baby did that. He would be so busy playing during the day, he didn't need the pacifier, I would only give it to him at night and then eventually I just stopped giving it to him and he would rock himself to sleep. I'm proud of him he just turned 1 and not even on the bottle anymore!

I wouldn't be in too big of a hurry unless you feel that using the pacifier is causing sleep disturbance. BUT, I've heard of several tips:
* I heard that you can snip off the tip of the nipple and keep on trimming a little off each day until the baby gives up
* You can quit cold turkey, you'll probably have a few bad days, but if you stick with it, it won't be very long before he won't even remember it
* Try other methods of comforting first. Only give the pacifier when all other options have been exhausted

Good luck!

I would say don't worry about taking the pacifier away now unless you really feel like you need to. One way to start the weaning process is to only allow him to have it in bed. Then not at naps only at bed time. Then not at all.
I waited until my daughter was 2. She had a new baby cousin and we "gave the binkies to the new baby". The first 3 nights were hard but after that she was fine.

First off, do you ever see a Groom or Bride walking down the isle to get married? NO! So, if that helps him sleep why not let him have it. Don't let him use it outside of the house though. My son had his until he was 3. I know bad mommy, but we had a house fire and that was his security. He will give it up, but don't force him to lose his security. It is better than a bottle at night that can ruin his teeth. Good luck

Let him keep the pacifier, there are brands that make orthodontic pacifiers that dont interfere with the teeth growing in. Go to walmart! :)

after 6 months babies do not need a pacifier rock him to sleep or lay down with him til he is asleep till he gets used to it otherwise he will develop a habit of having it and it will only get harder as time goes on to take it from him

my daughter was about 1 1/2 when i got her to give it up. she would get really bad patches of eczema around her mouth and lips caused by the drooling from teething while keeping the paci in. I asked her if she wanted the rash there, she told me no it hurts and i told her to give up the paci, and she didnt even ask once for it. when she sees babies with them now, she asks what is that, like she doesnt even remember it. It alll depends on the child and the parent really. if the parent is into furberizing a child than they might try to let them cry it out, thos eparents that dont believe in letting their child cry will let them have it unti they are ready to give it up. good luck and remember, it your call, dont worry about what other people think.

"The study, which surveyed 219 babies over a period of 18 months, found babies who were habitually put to bed with a pacifier were 20 times less likely to fall victim to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)."

Don't rush him.

At age 1 year throw it away, no 2nd guessing throw the bottle, binki. But at 6 months let the boy have it, it wont hurt his teeth and it sooths him. But by 1 year make sure its gone!!!! It will cause more problems by allowing him to have after 1 years old age!

Personally if it comforts him I would let him have it. Why are you so worried about taking it away now? My kids had them until two and we cut it down to just at night. I took them to the dentist at two and he told them that they needed to throw them away and we came home and they did and never asked for them again. Maybe its just me but anything that comforted my kids and helped them sleep made both of us happy.
